September 12: Listening with an Open Heart

“And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers”. -Luke 2:47

Our son, Blaine, was 4 years old when we moved from Chattanooga to Indianapolis. It is hard to leave the familiar behind and start again in a new place, especially with relationships. A few months after the move, I was with Blaine for bedtime. We read a book and he mentioned new kids he was meeting. I tucked covers around him, kissed him on the forehead, and sat on the edge of the bed a moment before leaving. He rolled over toward the wall and then turned back to me. “Dad, you know, when you don’t have friends, your heart is like this.” He held his hand out in a tight fist. “But then when you get friends your heart goes like this.” The fist slowly opened wide. Then he turned back over and went to sleep.

May we find around us the friends who help us open our hearts and may we be such open heart friends to others.
